Periodontal Health During Pregnancy

Swelling of gums is caused by plaque buildup.

One of the unique concerns women face during pregnancy is an increase in plaque that can threaten periodontal (gum) health. If left untreated, plaque buildup can lead to conditions such as pregnancy gingivitis and pregnancy tumors. Much of the change in oral health is due to hormones, so before the situation deteriorates, get the care you need by contacting our office today at 619-216-2807.

What is pregnancy gingivitis?

This is simply a form of the disease that commonly affects pregnant women. Like regular gingivitis, it causes red, swollen, tender gums that are more likely to bleed. Most pregnant women experience these problems to some degree, beginning especially in the second trimester. If you already have gingivitis, the condition may worsen.

What are pregnancy tumors?

They are an overgrowth of tissue that develops when swollen gums become irritated. Despite the name, they are benign and not at all cancerous. However, they may be especially uncomfortable when they interfere with chewing, brushing, or flossing.

It’s essential to prevent these problems by taking excellent care of your oral health. So make sure you brush and floss regularly, and be sure to contact us for a checkup if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. We’ll examine your condition and discuss a treatment plan to keep both mother and baby healthy!
